Sigmund Freud

Csorbató, July 6, 1917

Dear friend,

After such a long stay I owe you a detailed report. Above all, official thanks for your achievement in having arranged such a beautiful summer for us. For it is undeniably great and uniquely beautiful, nature in a rare way unspoiled and accessible, abundant and interesting, and it would be ideal if it had a southerly breeze as well, if the Tatra could be heated, as Anna says. I can, to be sure, do little climbing; here I have been convinced how much more this year has detracted from my constitution than I was aware of. But the Tatra can't help that. The food is of very good quality, both main meals gratifying, only breakfast is thoroughly deficient and made up of substitutes. Frau G. (more about her later) has brought a salami and other things to our house, and if you had not grown accustomed to making gifts out of groceries instead of enclosing bills, I would also ask you to send us some bacon and butter and the like (cheese) to store in the room. Anna, who is not finished with either her ears or with her purulent nasal catarrh is at least wolfing down her food [frisst] here in a very satisfactory way.
