Sándor Ferenczi

Montreux, September 3, 1924

Dear Professor,

I am writing to you only briefly and in a great hurry, so that you will receive this letter very soon. Your last letter was not only not unfriendly but, on the contrary, of a distinct friendliness and kept especially full of confidence. You can see my reaction from the enclosed letter,1 which I wrote to Rank already yesterday, when I likewise received from him the copy of his letter that was directed to you. Please send my letter back here after you have read it.

The tone that Rank strikes immediately appeared to me to be extremely repellent. But I intentionally avoided talking about this in my last letter to you, in order not to sharpen the opposition further.

I await your reply and the return of the letter to Rank. In the meantime I will reflect on everything you write and express myself in detail as soon as possible.

With kind regards in old devotion.

Yours truly,

Ferenczi

P.S. I haven't given up hope that Rank can still be kept, with an appropriate attitude on our part. We must at least try everything. Perhaps my letter will also have its effect; naturally, you shouldn't strike such a sharp tone as I.

F[erenczi].
