Dear Professor,

Since in the meantime you have actually received from my letter to Rank the answer to some earlier questions [addressed] to me, I will omit going into them again and will only reflect on your last letter.

I must, unfortunately, concede that the situation is not a very hopeful one. If Rank has now gone so far that he was able to send you that letter, then he has certainly settled accounts with everything.
