Sigmund Freud

Tegel, May 28, 1930

Dear friend,

Hearty congratulations for the long-anticipated, finally attained, villa! So, I didn't deceive myself. If I didn't estimate the time period correctly, it was only a consequence of not having taken the war into account. My prophetic gift is, like that of all prophets, very one-sided; while we recognize one element of the future, another eludes us.

The temptation to inspect your new address is naturally very great. I can't yet predict whether I will remain mobile enough. It would become even more pressing if it should turn out, through excavations in your garden, that the place had been taken up already earlier by a Roman villa, whose owner had even spent time in Egypt and had brought back some mementos from there.

The new dignity of being mistress of a castle will suit Frau G. very well. Well, when will you move into the idyll? We think we will stay another three weeks in Tegel.

Kindest regards,

Freud
