Dear Professor,

You can measure by the length of the reaction time the depth of the shock with which our conversation in Vienna before the Congress came to me. Unfortunately, such things are always connected to bodily ailments in me, so that my trip to the south of France by way of Baden-Baden was and is, actually, a “voyage de lit-à-lit.”2 We have also decided to go home as soon as possible and to arrive in Budapest already on the 1st rather than the 8th of October, this time without stopping in Vienna.

Strangely, it was (at least in my cs.) less the substance of the scientific differences that affected me in so painful a fashion than two seemingly externally symptomatic facts: bringing in a third person (as a witness or help), on top of that one about whom we know— with every recognition of his “bon sens”3— that he doesn't deserve to be a judge between us, either from a practical or a theoretical standpoint.4
