Dear Colleague,

I told you not long ago that I owed you some amends. I remember this as I write to you today, though your long silence points to your feeling seriously offended by the criticism in my last letter. You know that that criticism is consistent with the friendliest feelings towards you or, rather, derives from those feelings, because it was from my liking for you that I assumed the right to draw your attention to a wrong emotional turning along which I saw you making your way.
