Women & Analysis: Dialogues on Psychoanalytic Views of Femininity edited by Jean Strouse, Grossman Publishers, New York, 1974, 375 pages, $7.95

Review by:
Eleanor Yachnes, M.D.

This is an extraordinarily gracious and lively book which fulfills its aims most satisfyingly. Jean Strouse presents the changes that have taken place during the past fifty years in analytic attitudes about femininity. She also presents contemporary findings from analysis and other disciplines, findings that were unavailable to Freud and the earlier Freudians and which obviously must modify early theory. In this collection there is a thorough reexamination of the psychosexual development of women and, of necessity, men, girls, and boys, and those whose sexual identification poses marked problems. Most articles are by psychoanalysts, but there are many by researchers in integrally related fields such as endocrinology, sociology, and anthropology.

Generally, the style is informal. The personality of each writer comes through, and the first person is often used. The writers go to the source of feminine psychology, to the girls and women. Polemics are at a minimum, and the prevailing feeling is that we are at a new phase of scientific attempts to get at the reality of human psychology. It is an “in depth” work.
