The Use of Checkers in Handling Certain Resistances in Child Therapy and Child Analysis

Earl A. Loomis, Jr., M.D.

SUMMARY

Five clinical examples of ways in which checkers illuminated or facilitated therapy and analysis of children have been presented. While I personally find checkers particularly valuable in the uncovering and analysis of resistances and character problems, I am sure that similar applications are being made with many other games and modalities. The advantages of checkers are the facts that it is widely known, is familar to most latency children and adolescents, and is unusually appropriate as a game between adult and child which does not require any condescension on the part of the adult. This paper covers only a few of the special attributes and possibilities of checkers. It is hoped that it will stimulate the uncovering and sharing of other uses of the game, together with the examination of other types of therapist-child activities from similar points of view.
