Part 1

IN DECEMBER, 1920, a thirty-three-year-old psychiatrist by the name of Girindrasekhar Bose addressed the following letter to Freud:

Dear Sir:

I take the liberty to send you under separate cover a book entitled Concept of Repression as an insignificant presentation from its author.

Along with my friends and relations I have been a warm admirer of your theories and science; and it might interest you to learn that your name has been a household word in our family for the past decade.

I shall be delighted to have your opinion and suggestions about my work. Hoping to hear from you in due course,

I remain, Dear Sir,
Yours very sincerely
