Editor's Foreword

In 1966 at its Annual meetings, the American Psychoanalytic Association took cognizance of the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense, by devoting two panels to a discussion of the implications of this contribution for the subsequent development of psychoanalysis. Reports of these panels were published in Volume 15:130-165 of the Journal, 1967.

In the current issue of the Journal, further cognizance is taken of the impact that Anna Freud's contributions have had on psychoanalytic thinking by publishing several related articles. At the same time advantage is being taken of the coincidental conferring of an honorary degree upon Anna Freud, by publishing several addresses made on that occasion.
