Mary Jane Sherfey: "The Evolution and Nature of Female Sexuality in Relation to Psychoanalytic Theory"

This article was published in Volume 14 of this Journal. In it Sherfey proposed that data pointing to embryonic female primacy and the contributions of Masters and Johnson on female sexuality would require "amendation of psychoanalytic theory."

The interest aroused by this article culminated in a panel discussion devoted to an evaluation of Sherfey's contribution and those of Masters and Johnson. In addition, the Editors decided to invite a number of analysts to contribute written discussions of Sherfey's paper. At the same time, several papers on female sexuality became available. The publication of all these contributions in this issue of the Journal reflects the great current interest in psychoanalytic concepts of female sexuality.
