The Analysis of Defense: The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense Revisited: By Joseph Sandler with Anna Freud. Madison, Conn: Int. Univ. Press, 1985, 556 pp., $45.

Review by:
Leo Rangell, M.D.

This book has historic, scientific, and personal significance. Its origin and base were a series of discussions, conducted in 1972-1973, between Anna Freud and the Index Research Group of the Hampstead Clinic, chaired by Joseph Sandler and participated in by various staff members, students, and occasional visitors to the Clinic. Its content was an updated look with Anna Freud, almost forty years after its publication, at her classic work on the defense mechanisms, The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense.
