Review by:
Milton Viederman, M.D.

The study of psychoanalysis offers an opportunity to explore the larger realm of human experience and intellect, to travel vicariously in a world beyond our personal domain. This book exemplifies such a voyage. It fascinates, opens new perspectives. So powerful is the curiosity it evokes, that the reader feels impelled to read the sources and original texts that were the focus of the interdisciplinary conference on psychobiography and history that generated this volume. The participants conceptualize new methods, thereby broadening what has been called psychobiography. They demonstrate convincingly by their multifaceted analysis that all biography is psychobiography—of subject, of biographer, and of reader of texts—much of which operates at unconscious levels.
