This instructive collection of essays selects several central psychoanalytic concerns, summarizes the understanding of them we have accumulated over the past hundred years, and makes some stimulating and sensible suggestions as to where we might go from here. The individual contributions cohere into a whole unusually well because the ideals of a particular psychoanalytic subculture—that of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training, whose fortieth birthday symposium was the source of most of the papers in the book—exert an important organizing influence throughout.
