Psychotic Anxieties and Containment: A Personal Record of an Analysis with Winnicott: By Margaret I. Little. Northvale, NJ: Aronson, 1990, 129 pp., $20.00.

Review by:
Eric R. Marcus, M.D.

Margaret Little's brief report of her treatment with Winnicott joins the ranks of the very few such well informed reports of the techniques of the masters. One approaches such a work with expectation and excitement, especially with Winnicott where the relation between his theory of mind, his theory of technique, and practical technique is not obvious.

In addition, because Margaret Little helped apply psychoanalytic technique to the care of very ill psychiatric patients, coined the term psychotic transference, and calls herself delusional in the transference with Winnicott, one reads hoping for insight into questions of psychoanalytic technique with this group of "widening-scope" patients.

This first-person report on Winnicott's technique is authentic, moving, highly readable, and shows Winnicott's treatment personality. It is disappointing in its only brief detail and discussion of the technique and theory of treating very ill psychiatric patients with psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically based treatment.
