We live in an age in which orthodoxy is dissolving all around us. Within psychoanalysis this has led to a reexamination of Freud's personality and character and the orthodoxy that surrounded him.

The jacket of this small German volume informs us that Helmut Junker, born in 1934, is a member of the German and International Psychoanalytical Societies. This book deals with an evaluation of Freud's oeuvre, that of his students and colleagues, his biographers, intellectual and literary figures of his time, and Freud's personality and character. He raises the question of the need to idealize Freud and the reasons for the falsification of biographical data in the service of such idealization. He also casts doubts on the value of testimonies by Freud's contemporaries.
