Review by:
Stephanie Dee Smith

This remarkable book captures the scholarly attitude, attention to epistemic problems, and emphasis on critical thinking intrinsic to the Anna Freud Centre. The Centre has a long-standing tradition of theoretical and conceptual research based on study groups discussing clinical material. These groups find that “new clinical observations throw up new problems which require modification of existing theories or the development of new theoretical explanations. New theories in turn influence clinical understanding and technique” (Edgcumbe 2000, p. 79). More recently, Centre research analysts have been conducting empirical studies, including efforts to correlate and integrate psychoanalytic understanding with knowledge from other disciplines. In addition, there has been increasing interest in combining empirical methods with the work of clinical study groups and other qualitative methods.
