July 20, 2003. My suggestion to Alan Bass about the vast literature dealing with his “problem” was that it had been solved elsewhere. He now informs me that I understand neither the problem nor the solution. Unfortunately, I find his letter no more clarifying than his book. The debt that Bass claims I owe the reader is really his. I cannot hope to do more than refer Bass to a dictionary to look up processive, as in processive reality, and to see it defined as “moving forward”; to an article by Biswas—“The Symbolic and Concrete” (Int. J. Psycho-Anal. 84:733-753)—to see how most scholars use “concrete”; and to just about anyone else for an explanation of irony.
