Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy, Foundations of Theory and Practice, edited by David E. Scharff and Jill Savege Scharff, Karnac, 2014

Review by:
Peter Fullerton

In his Foreword, Brett Kahr describes the very evident work that has gone into this book as a transatlantic “coupling” of two institutions, the International Psychotherapy Institute (IPI), Washington, and the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR), London. Their long-standing collaboration is apparent, born no doubt out of the work both institutions have invested over many years in the thinking and practice of analytic work with couples.

The subtitle, Foundations of Theory and Practice, points directly at the international, jointly run course: “Foundations of psychoanalytic couple therapy”, from which the papers are drawn. The editors have produced a substantial resource, which will reward a serious and repeated engagement. It will be helpful for both those beginning to think about a practice in couple therapy, as well as for readers for whom working with couples is a long-standing and continuing endeavour. I have no doubt that this book will be used as a working syllabus for both formal and informal training programmes, and rightly so. I finished it, impressed by the successful mix of thought-provoking theory and accessible clinical material.
