Infant Observation: Its Relevance in Teaching Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy

This paper discusses debate on the relevance of infant observations under three headings: semantic, epislemologic, and teleologic. Infant observation is conceived very differently in classical psychoanalytic theory and in object relation theory, and unless we define these traditions, debate is impossible. The relative importance given to counter-transference in observations by both traditions—as much as to ways of conceiving the purpose of the observations—will determine how the critics respond.

Ce travail présente le déb at à propos de l'utilité de l'observation des nouveaux nés dans leur milieu familial enfaisant valoir des perspectives sémantiques, épistémologiques et téléologiques. La tradition classique (Tobservation préconisée par A. Freud est très opposée de la tradition (Tobservation faite par E. Bick. Leur maniement du contretransfert et leur approche individuelle ou groupale suppose des fondements épistémologiques fort différents. La conceptualisation à propos de l'utilité de telles observations en psychanalyse va aussi infiuencer les critiques.
