Experiencing Embodiment: A review of Embodiment: Creative Imagination in Medicine, Art, and Travelby Robert Bosnak. Routledge, 2007, 142 pp.

Review by:
Frances Sommer Anderson, Ph.D.

Embodiment, My First Encounter with Bosnak's Writing, offers a groundbreaking, challenging, radical change of perspective in how we conceptualize creative imagination. At the outset, he asserts, unequivocally, that the dream, where “imagination takes on body,” is “the most absolute and unmediated form of embodied imagination” (p. 9)—a strong, provocative assertion that he supports admirably in this deceptively slim volume. Bosnak uses evocative material from his dreamwork groups to demonstrate how this particular imagery can be used in healing practice. He goes further, providing material from his work with actors, to illustrate how embodied imagination can enhance performance. From his travels around the world, he illuminates ways in which unfamiliar landscapes can stimulate creative imagination through attention to the dreams they provoke.

Readers will be impressed by the solid theoretical and experiential foundation for Bosnak's dreamwork method, developed over the past 35 years.
