Reports and Brief Communication

Marja Lindqvist

New member of the IFPS Instituto Mexicano de Psicoanalisis, A.C. (IMPAC)

Instituto Mexicano de Psicoanalisis was founded in 1963 by Erich Fromm. The first training course had been held already in 1951. In 1956 Sociedad Mexicana de Psicoanalisis (from 1963 Sociedad Psicoanalitica Mexicana A.C.) was formed, and was one of the founding members of the IFPS. This society ceased to exist in the early 1980s. IMPAC's theoretical and conceptual orientation in psychoanalysis is even today strongly determined by the theory and ideology of Erich Fromm. This “humanistic psychoanalysis” emphasizes the unique character structure of the individual and the strong influence exercised by society and the family on the development of individual psychopathology. The Institute has trained fourteen courses of psychoanalytic candidates. At the moment they have two training courses and a total of sixteen candidates.

The members of the Institute, twenty-three persons in total, are all training and supervising analysts and members of the faculty. The training and supervising analysts should have been practising psychoanalysts for at least 5 years and demonstrated sufficient clinical and theoretical experience.

The Board of Directors consists of six members, with Dr Augusto Mario Reyes, M.D., as the Director. The Principal of Studies is Professor Eduardo Zajur, M.D.

Outlines for the training at IMPAC: 1. Admitted for training are MDs and clinical psychologists with a 1 year experience in a psychiatric hospital.
