Mistrusting the Soil in Which We Plant Our Feet: after Alexander Von Humboldt

Ona Lindquist

Everything is connected

Our ancestors, our origins

know our similarities

From every body part and portal

on earth covered thickly,

heaving mountains range

seas rise

Rivers and (tears of) grievers divine

the nature of our climatic souls

Where the fork divides us,

cooler heads prevail

at the mouths of the cold

Nothing exists in isolation

Some grow isolated, less alike

sparsely fashioned from rock

ore and ice

scenic as

a lone wolf roaming, attached

to the severed life

Others more temperate

live socially organized lives

occupying vast terrains of homogeneity

under the dome of sapient life

Less, interlace with no dominance

Soil, vegetation and weather unremitting,

structure stature, standing and footing

on hostile ground

a bitter diverse

grows wild and hot

in the fertile melange

of the enduring peat bog

Let it not be known, but given

the implicit and hidden have sway

rolling unbidden

off sodden tongue tips

skimming the slaver

alive, afloat, not always together

the brilliance of difference

in beings birthed

flare in the gory

when tortured natures

scorch the earth
