Large-Group-Psychology in Its Own Right: Large-Group Identity and Peace-Making

Vamik Volkan, M.D., DLFAPA, FACoPsa

In this paper I examine the psychology of “large-group identity,” its absorbing shared narcissism, its creating a “psychological border,” its relationship to massive traumas at the hand of the “other,” its role in national or international affairs, its raising substantial barriers to peaceful co-existence between “enemy” groups and describe what is large-group psychology in its own right.
