Applied Psycho-Analysis: H. E. Barnes. Psychology and History: Some Reasons for Predicting their More Active Cooperation in the Future. American Journal of Psychology, 1919, Vol. XXX, p. 337.

E. J.

An extremely interesting paper which does not lend itself to full abstracting and will repay reading in the original. After describing the main modes of approach to the interpretation of history the author advances the thesis that the psychological one is the most comprehensive of all. He discusses the difficulties and advantages of applying psycho-analytical knowledge for this purpose, being enthusiastic about its future possibilities. The greater part of the paper is taken up with a series of very suggestive hints of the ways in which this could be done, ranging from analytic comments on various American Presidents to the relation between Puritanism and smuggling. Unfortunately the author's knowledge of psycho-analysis, perhaps owing to war conditions, is practically limited to American writers, and not to the best of these.
