In this short article the author seeks to bring mystical ecstasy into line with hysterical dream-states, and considers that the ecstasy corresponds

to the four stages of the dream-states as given by Dr. Abraham in his article on Dream-states. The writer says that in mystics as well as in hysterics there is a primary auto-erotic or narcissistic activity, a secondary repression, and a final return of the repressed material in the sublimated or spiritualised form of a religious experience or a mystic ecstasy.
