Psycho-Analysis and Crime

Review by:
John Bowlby

By S. H. Foulkes. (English Studies in Criminal Science—Pamphlet Series, Cambridge, 1944. Pp. 43.)

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Delinquency. By Edward Glover. (Institute for the Scientific Treatment of Delinquency, London. Pp. 32.)

The first of these pamphlets is an exposition of the psycho-analytic theory of criminal behaviour, with particular emphasis on the social matrix in which the individual develops and commits his offences. It is intended for the layman and as a clear statement of the analytic point of view it performs a useful service.

The second is a clinical report on the work of the I.S.T.D. during its first five years 1937–1941, and shows that much useful work has been done. A plea is made for an extension of the Institute's activities and it is to be hoped it will meet with support. Whether it is effective propaganda to base this plea to such an extent on an analysis of the results of treatment may be doubted, since, for familiar and at present unavoidable reasons, convincing statistical evidence of the benefits of psychotherapy is almost impossible to obtain. It seems probable that the most effective propaganda in the future will be studies of the psychological causes of criminal behaviour, using normal controls for comparison.
