Tip: To sort articles by year…

PEP-Web Tip of the Day

After you perform a search, you can sort the articles by Year. This will rearrange the results of your search chronologically, displaying the earliest published articles first. This feature is useful to trace the development of a specific psychoanalytic concept through time.

For the complete list of tips, see PEP-Web Tips on the PEP-Web support page.

A Chronological Hand-List of Freud's Works

Alan Tyson and James Strachey

What follows is intended to be a complete list of all Freud's writings published before November 1955. A few works which are planned to appear for the first time after that date have also been included. No mention, however, is made in this list of the numerous letters and extracts from letters contained in the volumes of Dr. Ernest Jones's Sigmund Freud: Life and Work, London and New York, 1953, 1955. The list has been divided into two parts: (A) Original Writings and (B) Abstracts, Reviews and Translations made by Freud of the writings of other authors.

References are given:

For the German or other original text: to Gesammelte Schriften and Gesammelte Werke or (in their absence) to the original publication or some accessible place.

For the English: to Collected Papers and Standard Edition or (in their absence), in the case of books, to an English and an American source; in the case of papers, to the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis or some other accessible place. The list contains only English translations. A much fuller bibliography, with complete lists of all editions and of translations in all languages, is being prepared by Dr. Alexander Grinstein for inclusion in his new Index of Psychoanalytic Writings. We are most grateful to him for the assistance he has given us. We are also particularly indebted to Dr. K. R. Eissler, Secretary of the Sigmund Freud Archives Inc., for his constant help.

The writings in both sections of the list are numbered, as will be seen, by means of a date and a distinguishing letter.
