Clinical Data Service (C.D.S.)

H. S. Klein and D. Meltzer

Your interest and cooperation are invited in an experiment in scientific communication among those psycho-analysts who have a strong interest in the developments that have sprung from the work of Melanie Klein. While the official journals and publishers offer ample scope for contributions to the literature of psycho-analysis, international communication about problems of current interest in regard to the clinical work of psycho-analysis is virtually nonexistent. The tendency for isolated regional development is therefore checked only by the occasional visiting lecturer and returning student. Personal relations on an international level are restricted to senior people who are thrown together mainly by political and organization problems. As a result, little opportunity exists for young analysts to present their work, and they are thus deprived of one of the major vehicles of technical development.

With these problems in mind, and with the added intention of providing a means whereby clinical information may accumulate for future use, the C.D.S. is put forward for consideration. It is a service not a journal, and is offered as follows:

i. It is distributed to its clients as received, without selection or editing, in numbers of fifty pages each.

ii. It contains the following types of contribution:

a. clinical data notes, not longer than 4, 000 words, in English;

b. statements of clinical problems with requests for information from other analysts, not longer than 2, 000 words;

c. therapeutic results—clients are supplied with a diagnostic data sheet, to be drawn up by the directors, by means of which they are invited to report privately their clinical results. This aspect of the service is optional.

iii. This service is operated by its directors as a cooperative. An annual statement of accounts will be produced and the deficit will be equally divided among its clients.

The service commenced in September, at present serving a clientele of eighty analysts from twelve countries, who have been privately circularized because of their known interest in the work of Melanie Klein.

Further information and application forms may be obtained by writing to the directors.
