Review by:
Louise Carignan

The foundations of psychoanalysis are questioned by many voices today, speaking both from inside and outside the field. A Critique Of Psychoanalytic Reason combines the perspectives of an analyst devoted to research in hypnosis and a philosopher of science. The authors re-examine Freud's foundation of the psychoanalytic method within the evolving epistemological context of modern science. They argue that Freud's endeavours to construct a science of the irrational have failed and that this failure forces us to reconsider the scientific model which guided him.

In summary: (1) Freud abandoned hypnosis to create a more reliable and objective technique.
