Impasse and Innovation in Psychoanalysis: Clinical Case Seminars: Edited by John E. Gedo and Mark J. Gehrie, Hillsdale, NJ: The Analytic Press. 1993. Pp. 320.

Review by:
Boyd L. Burris

In 1988-9, Doctors John E. Gedo and Mark J. Gehrie, of the faculty of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, offered an elective seminar for candidates of that Institute who had completed the required curriculum as well as for interested faculty members. The seminar was entitled 'The Integration of Theory and Technique' and centred around difficult cases and challenging technical problems. The liveliness and novelty of discussion in the seminar eventually encouraged Gedo and Gehrie to record the sessions on tape and to use the seminar proceedings as the basis of this book they have co-edited on 'the most controversial aspects of contemporary analytic technique' (p. vi).

This account of several analysts talking about interesting cases is a vivid chronicle in which the reader can easily picture herself/himself waiting to make the next comment or ask the next question.
