Transferência e Contratranferência [Transference and Countertransference] by Marion Minerbo Casa do Psicólogo, São Paulo, 2012; 298 pp; R$56.58

Review by:
Ana Maria Loffredo

In its essayistic style Transferência e contratransferência addresses the different dimensions between the meta-psychological imagination and the operation of the psychoanalytic method that together make up the heart of psychoanalytic clinical practice.

The reader is propelled along by its fluent prose that allows one to traverse diverse conceptual repertoires as well as to take detours into very complex matters. The reader is stimulated by several research programs that are offered in the course of this journey, and these programs can be taken up again, in the event the reader is interested in learning more. This programmatic itinerary's thread is gradually and patiently extended through a warp and woof that is solid and faithful to the author's intentions. Thus the complexity of the matters dealt with is laid out in a sort of spiral sketch that allows issues to be taken up at several different times and at different levels. As the study advances, it perfects the orchestration of the theoretical instruments.

One immediately sees Minerbo's sensitive mobility among her roles as a psychoanalyst, teacher, and supervisor. These roles creatively intertwine in this author's outlook. Thus, in her organization of topics and in the form the particular items are presented, one clearly perceives the text's structure to be linked to its original sources. The book is a by-product of a course Minerbo taught in São Paulo at the SBPSP (Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise de São Paulo [The Brazilian Society of Psychoanalysis of S São Paulo]) as well as the author's coordination with other psychoanalytic groups.
