Towards the Consummation of a Postmodern Marriage: Psychoanalytical Theory and Practice, and Research. Part I: Review of relational ideas and research findings

Juan Jimenez and Carolina Altimir

This is the first of two papers devoted to the topic of the conditions for a constructive interdisciplinary dialogue between psychoanalytic theory and practice, and research in disciplines of the mind that are close to psychoanalysis. It reviews the contemporary controversy on psychoanalysis and research and the contributions that different disciplines, such as psychotherapy and psychoanalysis process research, attachment and early mother-infant relationship, and neurosciences could be relevant for the construction of theory in psychoanalysis. The gaps in the scientific research of central aspects of psychoanalytic conception, such as the dyadic nature of the construction of experience in therapy and the relationship between the implicit and explicit levels of the analytical relationship, are highlighted. A second paper will develop an innovative, clinically sensitive and scientifically sound research program that addresses the highlighted gaps.
