A propos d’un cas de pompier « pyromane »

Frederic Brossard

Due to financial losses and the impact on wildlife, pyromaniac firefighters have become a real social problem. Recent studies have come to question whether pyromania could lead to a career as a firefighter, or conversely, if the job of firefighter would lead to pyromania. Currently, I societal policies lean towards this second hypothesis. Indeed, the principal means of action today involve prevention, particularly through recruitment and training. First of all, this question will lead us to the presentation of a young man wishing to become a firefighter. This will allow us to introduce this individual’s currentinterest for fire from a legal and psychiatric perspective. The case study will lead us to think about how the fantasies of firefighters and those of the criminal firefighter differ. How do these fantasies organize and nourish the psychic economy? Is the concept of acting out relevant in this case? Can we observe a failure of representations but also a breakdown of fantasy as some analysts suggest? What could be the functions of these different psychic mechanisms?
