What impact does the frequency of sessions per week have on our understanding of psychoanalytic treatment?

This paper seeks to consider how the frequency of sessions per week as an aspect of the psychoanalytical setting has theoretical, technical and political implications. The understanding of this crucial aspect of a psychoanalytic treatment needs developing so that the choice of any one frequency for a particular patient can be made without recourse to a solely intuitive choice. Further, this matter has been a source of much disagreement in the psychoanalytic profession and literature. Using some of the insights derived from understanding the mind as a non-linear system, the author proposes that a more systematic means of making this decision can be made. This has implications for the training of psychoanalysts.
