Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Elizabeth A. Corpt, M.S.W., L.I.C.S.W. and Annette Richard, M.Ps.

It is with great pleasure that we take on the privilege and challenge of assuming the Co-Editorship of Psychoanalysis, Self, and Context. We must begin by acknowledging the tremendous contributions of our predecessors, Doris Brothers and Roger Frie. During their several years of serving as Co-Editors of this journal, they have not only astutely guided the journal through the daily, monthly, and yearly tasks any editor assumes - including the sometimes difficult and often time-crunched decisions that have to be made along the way - they took on much more. Roger and Doris took on the task of strengthening and transforming the face of IAPSP through the rethinking of the journal and its place within the larger psychoanalytic and scholarly context in which it sits. By ‘face’, we do not mean something simple, cosmetic, and superficial – a surface-only change – although a new name and cover was part of the transition. Rather, the change Roger and Doris advocated for and brought to fruition - transforming the journal from the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology to Psychoanalysis, Self and Context - held a much more thoughtful, visionary, and nuanced intention for the journal that serves as our face to the larger professional community. As we now see it from our new perspective as editors, we realize the potential of this change. The journal becomes strengthened by its invitation and appeal to a broader audience. Without compromising the ideals and values of self-psychology, Psychoanalysis, Self, and Context has the potential, not only to strengthen, maintain, and nourish those within our immediate community, but to provide avenues of potential exposure of self-psychological ideas, ideals, and values beyond our usual borders.
