Sigmund Freud

Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
20. xii. 1937

Dear Meister Arnold,

Fine, a letter with only good news, some of it indeed very good, such as the report on the improvement of your eyes. If that remains so or they go on improving I shall try to think móre kindly of amyl nitrite. It was given me when I had my heart trouble, and I hated it because it gave me such unpleasant sensations of congestion in the head. And you have had your 50th birthday without my being able to send you my warm congratulations on a half-century of artistic creativity and struggle.

I would have answered earlier had I not been waiting for the new chapter of the Einsetzung. When the book arrived we sent it straight away to our friend Dorothy Burlingham, who had just gone into a sanatorium for treatment of a recurrence of TB. Anna returned from there with the news that the story is continued beyond Bärbel's death and that we must wait till the book comes back to us.
