Dear Father Freud, dear Frau Professor, dear Anna,

Last night our faithful friend Eitingon rang up to say that you all leave Vienna tomorrow morning. And although I still cannot quite believe that everything will go according to plan, I want to think that after all the frightful things that have happened, this little favour of fortune will at last come off. And so my congratulations and from the bottom of my heart I wish the stupid old formula: Thank God! Your card, dear Father Freud, came like a good omen, though your handwriting revealed what your words had perforce to conceal. But whatever may have been lost, whatever must be built anew, the main thing is: You are out and you look back on the smoking ruins like people fleeing from Sodom… That it had to come to this, that the lords had to hand over Vienna and Austria to these villains, to show in what a world we live! How terrible, how tragic! And that you should all have stayed on there, trusting in Schuschnigg, till the rubble covered you like an avalanche! But now everything will be better and easier and slowly peace and joy in your grandchildren, of whom you have been deprived for so long, will return to your wounded heart.

Did Martin cross the frontier illegally as we have been told? Did he manage to save anything of the funds of the Verlag or of your own money? How wisely you warned me in my day.
