Editor's Foreword to The Letters of Sigmund Freud and Arnold Zweig
Ernst L. Freud
The plan to publish the following correspondence dates back to the year 1955, when Arnold Zweig placed copies of Freud's letters to him at the disposal of Ernest Jones for his biography of my father. From that date Zweig never ceased to hope that these letters might appear in book form. It was not, however, until 1963 that he asked me to act as editor and at the same time to arrange for an English translation.
Even after Zweig had removed a few of the more personal passages from his letters, certain further cuts still seemed desirable to me: on the one hand some too detailed accounts by Zweig of his neurosis and analysis, and on the other hand all too frequent and exaggerated eulogies of my father. All these omissions were carried out in agreement with Dr. Adam Zweig of Basel, who had been entrusted by his father with this task.
The German edition of the correspondence appeared in 1968, published by the S. Fischer Verlag, Frankfort, only a few months before Zweig's death, and I hope he was still able to enjoy the great interest it evoked among the reading public and the praise accorded it by the critics.
As editor I should like to thank the translators, Professor and Mrs. W. D. Robson-Scott, and also the English and American publishers, The Hogarth Press and Mr. Masud Khan, editor of the International Psycho-Analytical Library, and Mrs. Helen Wolff of Harcourt, Brace and World, New York, respectively.
