Some Thoughts about Infant Psychopathology and Aggressive Development

Eleanor Galenson

SUMMARY

Disturbances in aggression in infancy in five psychopathological syndromes are described and are illustrated by clinical case material. The five syndromes are:

1. Physical abuse.

2. Early psychosis.

3. Deviant female early sexual development.

4. Failure to thrive without organic cause.

5. Infantile autism.

The aetiological role of excessive environmental aggression in producing these disorders is hypothesized as well as the role of each infant's psychological coping with these noxious external stimuli.
