To the Editors

Arlene Kramer Richards, ED.D.

Mr. Waska is correct in his assertion that Greenson believed Glover to be a non-Kleinian. However, many authors report that Glover was a follower of Klein until 1934. The article Glover wrote in 1932 and published in 1933 was written and published while he was still a Kleinian. The most succinct statement of this turnaround is in The Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique by Etchegoyen (1991). The following is his statement:

“In London there was a time, until the mid-1930s when the entire British Psychoanalytic Society was grouped around Melanie Klein. But when she wrote “A Contribution to the Psychogenesis of Manic-Depressive States” for the Lucerne Congress of 1934 (published in 1935) many ceased to follow her; Glover declared himself openly in disagreement, considering that she had removed herself completely from Freud and from psychoanalysis” (p. 214).

I identified Glover as a Kleinian in that article because I wanted to make it clear that his position at that time was Kleinian. I was focusing on technique, not on Glover's later change of mind. I apologize to Mr. Waska for any discomfort I may have caused him by not spelling out the whole history, but I did not make a false statement.
