Review by:
Roger Hobdell

The twelve main chapters of the book are concerned with the concepts central to twelve personality theories. In the introductory chapter the Editor explains how he selected the few theories from the many, sending an explanatory manual of what he wanted to various well-known authors. Dr Corsini, a psychologist, says that he has been so often sold one personality theory only to be convinced later by another one, ‘but they didn't seem to be discussing the same sort of thing’. He admits his idealism in attempting to get so many diverse theoreticians to talk the same language, or at least, in a different language about the same things. But it is indeed like looking at the same landscape painted by Claude, Van Gogh or Mondrian. Whereas we can admire the individualism of the painter, Dr Corsini belongs to that group of people who hope there can be a consensus of opinion when it comes to personality, in spite of the fact that here especially the personality of the theorist influences the theory and we know that theorists come in many shapes and sizes. Of course, you can side-step the issue, like B. F.
