Review by:
Margaret Wilkinson

I was pleased to have the opportunity to review this book as I have enjoyed much of Michael Eigen's earlier work; I particularly appreciate the creative way he is able to use Bion's work to facilitate a deeper understanding of trauma. This book is in keeping with Eigen's earlier writings, dedicated as it is to ‘storm survivors, storm transformers, and those who live and work in the storm's heart’. It is written around musings on Bion's remark that ‘when two personalities meet, an emotional storm is created’ (1994, p. 321, cited on p. 5). Eigen entitles his introduction to the book ‘Inside the Storm’. He asserts, ‘I believe the scream of infancy never stops. It is part of our beings all life long. We never stop hearing, if only in whispers, a screaming self’ (p. i). These words provide not only a foretaste of the contents of the book but also an accurate description of all that is explicated within it.

There are interesting explorations of inner and outer; Eigen comments: ‘sometimes outside storms are created, not simply in place of or to express inside ones, but because inside ones remain inchoate, beyond grasp, hungry’ (p. 6).
