Adoption: Perspectives and Fantasy

Barbara D'Amato, Psya.D.

In this paper the author considers facts and research, myths and fantasies surrounding adoption. Libidinal and aggressive ideas and fantasies are explored in terms of the historical discourse encompassing Western views about adoption and adoptees. Through case material the author illustrates how fantasies and conflicts experienced by all members of the adoption triad are expressed in treatment. Finally, the similarities and differences between adoptive and biological parenting are considered.
