Norman Reider

Exhaustion accompanied by hyperpyrexia and dehydration due to overactivity in mental illness is treated by the intravenous administration of 5 percent alcohol in dextrose-saline solution followed within twenty-four hours by electroshock. The rationale is borrowed from the recent use of alcohol intravenously in postsurgical cases. The authors state that they have treated eighteen patients in this way with good results in all but one.
