The author amplifies the proposition suggested in a previous paper,1 that the first measure of experience of the infant is through the tongue, and that the tongue is of primary significance in the organization of the body ego, serving as a primal medium of object cathexis. The clinical material was derived from four patients whose histories gave evidence of early disturbances of ego synthesis and whose symptoms included tongue swallowing and tongue sucking.
