DISCUSSION: Dr. Charles Fisher took up the question of the ontogenetic manner in which the secondary process evolves from the primary process. He did not feel that Dr. Rapaport had demonstrated clearly that the secondary process has independent and innate sources. He quoted some unpublished correspondence he had had with Dr. Rapaport in which the latter had stated that the ego 'uses' primary process modes of thought and behavior as well as secondary, and that the primary process mode of functioning does not only characterize the id.
