Emmett Wilson, Jr.

J. B. Pontalis has proposed a view of the dream as a transitional object, oscillating between the me and the not-me, between subjectivation and objectivation. Guillaumin questions the designation of the dream as a transitional object, for a transitional object begins with something concrete, a physical object, as a necessary support for the fantasy activity involved. There is no such corporality, of course, to the dream. It would be most tenuous to designate the telling of the dream as the material reality, and even Pontalis rejects this approach. There is, nevertheless, an intuitive aptness to Pontalis's view, because the dream has a sort of metabolic value for the psychic life. Guillaumin rejects Masud Khan's attempt to substitute "dream experience" for this concept, as too lost in Winnicottian vagueness. Guillaumin offers his own term, "dream world," to emphasize these transitional and creative aspects of the dream. As for the materiality involved, it is the dreamer himself. In his search for identity, the dreamer has traversed concrete, material reality in illusory fashion.
