Marianne Makman

This interesting paper is somewhat diffuse in content. First, Ekstein asserts his belief that there can be a true working through of termination in the treatment of psychotics and illustrates this with excerpts from a case treated successfully many years ago. He then speaks more generally of the powerful countertransference problems arising in the treatment of psychotic children. He emphasizes the importance of a firm sense of self-worth which protects the therapist from the need to make antitherapeutic demands upon the patient to prove his or her worth.
