The author interprets the negative therapeutic reaction, which occurs in a variety of forms, as a recapitulation of unmastered disturbances of detachment stemming from the mother-child dyad. It is a mistake to interpret prematurely the aggression which the patient experiences in relation to the therapist within this context. Four case examples document the thesis.
